Beautiful Savior of the Body
Updated: Aug 16, 2021
“The Lord God planted a garden in Eden; and there He put the human. And the Lord God caused to grow every tree that is pleasing and good for food; the Tree of Life, and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil [Bad]” (Genesis 2:8-9).
The oldest story in the Bible is about a woman who couldn't stay on a diet. There were two trees and one rule: eat this, not that, and still she blew it. And she was in the middle of Paradise! Isn't it interesting that the first temptation was about food that led to the curse and the Last Supper was the meal that delivered us from the curse? Food is from God. It is provision for the body and a feast for the soul. Both are basic needs of the human experience.
What to eat has become one of the most confusing decisions on earth. Keto, Paleo, Vegan, and Vegetarian diets are trending in the twenty-first century. Calorie counting, low carb, low fat, fasting, and intermittent fasting, are all proven losers for the win. Starve the body on one meal a day. Fuel the body on five. Join the club, get the app, buy a subscription, join a medical trial, have the surgery, they all work -- for an average of $25-$200 per pound. Potions and supplements made with herbs discovered on foreign lands -- Africa, Asia, even the holy land -- all offer the "secret" to weight loss and supernatural powers to regulate and heal the body. Even this morning I spent almost an hour listening to a guy tell a sad story about his wife's decline into metabolic quicksand even though she was "doing everything right." Even he, as a fitness guru was unable to keep her from stepping off into the oblivion of belly fat hell. He had found the "cure" through an Asian doctor and the superpowers of a special brand of Safflower. I almost bought the stuff. I mean, it's a supplement! It's okay to buy supplements, right? Yes, if you're not depending on them more than God. God made safflowers, but my heart was not looking at this potion as a supplement, I was looking at it as the substance, my hope, the object of my faith. So, what is the answer?
Of course, it's fine to join the gym, take the class; cardio, dance, or walk. I'm planning to work in a gym routine myself. There is also some science to using herbs, or certain essential oils to massage it, electrodes designed to zap it, and procedures to freeze it, melt it, restrict it, and cut it off. But it is only wisdom if instruction is coming from the right Tree. Are you asking the Father for His leadership, or just trusting the latest information from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil? That's the clincher. Where are you putting your trust? You have a free will. You can do whatever you want to and if you're lucky, you will succeed. For a little while. Depending on your DNA, your body will either comply or the weight will fly back on you with a vengeance. Why? Because God never designed anything to "lose." And once the body was programmed, whether through a faulty genetic code or lean body wiring, it was set on course to accomplish that design. In a cursed world, sometimes that means a cursed predisposition to carry an inordinate amount of weight on your frame.
So, what makes fat folks fat? One thing is the number of adipose cells you were born with. Adipose cells hold fat; the more you have the fatter you are. Lean people have far fewer adipose cells than heavy people. If you don't have them you will never be fat no matter how much you eat. If you have them they will multiply every time you eat fat. This makes me wonder what happens when folks with a predisposition to obesity go off of the popular KETO diet. Not only will that person have the number of fat cells that came through their genetic code, but they now have new permanent "friends" to feed. Once adipose cells are there, they cannot be removed, only managed. In fact, they multiply. You can starve them for a while, but you can never eradicate them. As long as they exist, there is the distinct possibility, or probability, they will fill back up. Bottom line? Permanent weight loss for those with an inordinate number of adipose cells is, well, in the natural, impossible. Not to mention the role the hypothalamus, pituitary, thyroid, and liver play in appetite, cravings, and fat storage. There is science for all this, friend. (In my upcoming book Slave Trade: Ransomed Beauty, Rescued Bride references are provided for further research). This is why your lean well-meaning friend who lost five pounds after they cut out three sodas a day does not have the answer for you.
"23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
24 Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it." (I Thessalonians 5:23-24).
So, is there any such thing as permanent weight loss? Is there hope at all for the genetically challenged with a predisposition to be overweight to ever be transformed into God's original design? With the discovery of the "fat gene," medical science is working frantically to find the "cure," the drug that will change the world and bring the prize: money in their pocket. And like the woman in the Bible with another embarrassing problem which had also become her identity, many will spend "all" they have (Mark 5:26) for the potion, treatment, or pill that will bring the hope of a future in the land called "normal."
I'm sure you see where we're going here. All of these programs, books, information, clubs, and potions rely on knowledge. Where does that come from? From the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil: this is good, that's bad. Eat this, not that. But, friend, knowledge is not designed to provide a permanent solution. It cannot, because knowledge changes constantly. What was true five minutes ago is not true five minutes from now. Knowledge never comes to a conclusion, only an endless possibility, and it never will. The cure for the impossible comes from only one source: The Tree of Life.
But where to start? In the puddle of tears at the end of the day "knowledge" is just a pile of good ideas. They hold truth only if applied by faith, not in and of themselves, but in the Creator, the Maker of all creation; The Truth; The Tree of Life, Jesus Christ, Himself. Finding "truth" about the healing and restoring the body back to its original God-design will take leaning into the conversation the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are having about you and me all the time. That's the conversation we want to hear. That's the conversation we want to engage in and go forth from with instruction; divine, customized instruction, straight from the mouth of God. So, how can we turn from one Tree to the Other? The word "repent" comes to mind. It means, simply, "turn around and go the other way." Let's start right here. Pray these simple words:
"Father, forgive me for not trusting Your Leadership, for trusting myself and others to do what You, Yourself want to do (I Thes. 5:23-24). As the head of the Church, Christ is the Savior of the body (Eph. 5:23) so I am taking all this information and all this knowledge I have "eaten" from the wrong tree and I lay it at Your feet. I know you desire Oneness with me as the Father, Son, and Spirit are one (John 17:23). I want to hear the Trinitarian conversation going on between Father, Son, and Spirit about me, so that I may come into agreement with it and walk it out in the earth. Give me ears to hear Your instruction, and I will speak it forth. Give me eyes to see how the Spirit of the Lord sees me, so that I have a heavenly vision to "run with" (Hab. 2:2). I lay down my ideas and plans. I trust Your plan, Your leadership to restore my body to wholeness. I give my body to You as a "living sacrifice," ( Rom. 12:1) wholly acceptable to You, absolutely perfect, and flawless in Your sight. May it be so on earth as in heaven. Amen.
I'm glad you're on this journey with me, whether in prayer for me or prayer for friends and loved ones who struggle in this area. Next time we will explore what it means to lean in to that three-fold cord relationship with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and partake of the Tree of Life. Meanwhile, be sure and pick up your free gift.
