Bible Reading Marathon
While visiting Israel with several others, Dr. Bill Bright, founder of Campus Crusade for Christ, heard the Bible being read aloud publicly from the Mt. of Olives in celebration of the 1990 International Year of Bible-Reading campaign.
After returning home, it was felt that we should hold our own BRM (Bible Reading Marathon). Mrs. Vonette Bright, then Chairman for NDP suggested we host a BRM in conjunction with the National Day of Prayer. As a result, in May 1990, the first public reading of the scriptures took place on the steps of the U. S. Capitol and it continues to this day every year in early May. Bible Reading Marathons have been conducted on the steps of state capitols, county courthouses, school campuses, city parks, and churches. Bible Reading Marathons have been successful across America and in many nations around the world in drawing attention to the importance of reading the entire Bible. (Dr. John A. Hash, Founder, President of Bible Pathway Ministries).
The National Day of Prayer Task Force urges states to host a BRM each year in conjunction with the first Thursday in May NDP. The BRM is a wonderful opportunity for churches, Sunday school classes, homeschoolers, families, children and teens, college students, organizations and individuals to unite in publicly declaring the power and truth of God’s word over our cities and our nation. “The word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword . . .” (Hebrews 4:12).
Along with many other states, the Richmond Region NDP has held our own BRM in conjunction with the annual first Thursday of prayer in May. We are thankful for those that have organized this yearly event over the past years, but we are now in need of a church or individual or other group willing to embrace the leadership and organize for a powerful and effective BRM in 2020.
We look forward to sharing the logistics of organizing, location, recruiting and assigning readers to time slots, etc. to host an effective and successful BRM.
